Frequently asked questions

What is Public Hire insurance?

Public hire insurance is a type of taxi insurance for licensed vehicles, such as black cabs or hackney carriages, that are authorised by the relevant licensing authority to pick up passengers without a pre-booking. This means drivers can accept immediate hire journeys, whether that’s from a taxi rank or being hailed on the street. It gives drivers the specialist cover they need to carry paying passengers legally and safely.

Does Public Hire insurance cover me for personal use?

Yes, all taxi policies we arrange include Social, Domestic and Pleasure use as standard. This will enable you to drive your vehicle for personal use and gives the convenience of one policy covering your personal and professional needs.

Does Public Hire insurance include Public Liability?

Yes. Public Hire insurance is designed to help protect you, your passengers and members of the public while you’re working. Annual policies arranged by us include Public Liability cover as standard, and cover can include medical expenses for you and your passengers. Please read your policy details for the full terms that apply.

Can I pay for Public Hire insurance monthly?

Yes. For annual policies, you can choose to pay for your Public Hire insurance in full or you can spread the cost over 11 monthly payments, depending on the payment options available when you get your quote.

What information do I need for a public hire insurance quote?

To get a Public Hire insurance quote, you’ll need to provide details about you, your vehicle and how you use it. This can include your driving history, taxi licence information, vehicle details, annual mileage, where the vehicle is kept overnight, and any previous claims or motoring convictions.
